Percussion Medley’ was composed in 2001 by Hong Kong composer Yuen-hing Yau, is a lively, colorful concerto for percussion instruments and concert band. Music excerpts were carefully chosen from varies origins, including pop music, animation theme and musical film. The original elements were cleverly arranged by the composer.Introduction to the piece is consists of motifs from each music excerpts appeared later, leading the audiences into a pure and childlike atmosphere. The following excerpts, in the order of appearance, come with the celebrated song ‘New York, New York’ by Frank Sinatra, recorded in his 1979 album, creating a lively urban feeling. Melody varied between soloists and band. With no trace, time signature was changed into 6/8, main theme from popular 1973 Japanese animation ‘Doraemon’ appeared gradually. Xylophones, Marimbas, Vibraphone were commonly used with the impish feature of those instruments, expressing the majestic atmosphere of marching. Music suddenly turned into a dynamic pace, presenting the main theme of 1990 Japanese animation ‘Chibi Maruko-chan.’ The competitive passages between soloist and band implied the household name of the lyric from original song. Afterwards, with the breathtaking Latin music, ‘Mambo,’ the epic scene of the ball in stadium from ‘Westside Stroy’ appeared. The dazzling and modern rhythm and melody brought a carnival-like occasion among soloists and band.
