“Reflections of Taiwan Folk Songs” is based on two early Taiwan folk songs: “I Hope You Come Home Early” and “Ruan Ruo Opens the Window in his Heart.” The composer himself is the permanent conductor of Tainan No. 1 High School Alumni Wind Orchestra, and he created a representative piece for the orchestra’s first performance in the National Concert Hall; Another motivation is that when the composer taught the general music appreciation course in domestic universities, he felt that the young generation of students were not familiar with the early Taiwan folk songs, so he chose this as the theme of his creation, hoping to arouse the young people’s new touch to the beautiful and profound meaning of Taiwan folk songs.
The composer did not choose a number of Taiwan ballads in tandem, but deliberately chose these two ballads as the material, using composing techniques to connect these two ballads artfully. In music, the parallel key conversion (from f minor to F major) is used to represent the change of mood. In terms of motivation, the first five notes at the beginning of the two ballads, except for the difference in tone, are exactly the same in interval, and have a very high similarity. Therefore, in the cohesive paragraph of the song, the composer deliberately juxtaposed, overlapped or cut the same motive of the two songs, and the last paragraph ended with multi-part counterpoint. What is more special is that the composer uses a lot of white space in the musical conception at the beginning and the beginning of the music. Unlike the usual western wind music, which tends to be heavy and full of sound, the composer hopes that this piece will give the listener more room for auditory meditation.
In addition, the author also hopes to convey certain moral through this work. The first paragraph “I hope you will return early” symbolizes the sad past of the Taiwanese people, but the second paragraph “Ruan Ruo opens the window in his heart” is like the Taiwanese people under the difficult environment, still do not bow to the fate, and finally open the window to face life optimistically. The composer wishes that with the melody’s profound meaning, we can all put aside the pain of the past and turn to the bright side of life!
