This arrangement of Gershwin’s “Summertime” features both the theme and a jazzy solo for clarinet or alto saxophone in quartet form.
In the version for clarinet quartet, the third clarinet part deserves extra attention as the intonation of the chalumeau register might be difficult. In the version for saxophone quartet, the baritone saxophone part has been adapted to suit the range of the instrument and the dexterity of the player.
The jazz-style used in this quartet has been described in the course for jazz-improvisation, “Take Up Jazz” (Chester Music, London).
It is also possible to play this quartet with mixed combinations; 1st alto saxophone and three clarinets or three clarinets with a baritone saxophone.
The dotted rhythm should be played with a triplet feel.
