1984年底，中國和英國簽訂了中英聯合聲明，不少香港人對1997年回歸後的香港的前景表示憂慮，從而開始了長達數年的移民風潮，《東方之珠》就是在這個背景下創作的。羅大佑有意把東方與西方的音樂特質混合，體現香港華洋雜處的特點，於是以中國五聲音階譜寫主歌，副歌則運用了西方樂理中和弦分解的寫法。由日本作曲家下田和輝趕邊為管樂團演奏曲。

A considerable amount of people in Hong Kong showed their anxiety toward the future after the Handover of Hong Kong in 1997, thus begin the wave of immigration for years. ‘Pearl of Orient’ was composed with the above background. The songwriter Luo Tayou intends to mix the musical feature of east and west, portraying the mix-cultural character of Hong Kong, using the pentatonic scale in the verse, and arpeggio in chorus, which represents the western music composition. The version was adapted to concert band by Japanese composer Shimoda Kazuki.
