Zigeunerweisen’, also known as “Gipsy Airs,” is an everlasting classic for violin. Pablo de Sarasate’s (1844-1908) composition for the violin highly demanded both the expression and technique. Zigeunerweisen is above all the most celebrated repertoire. Audiences overwhelmed by the magnificent acoustic with significant pathetic atmosphere and virtuosity of skill. Gypsies (called Romani nowadays) reside widely through the world, originate from the northern India subcontinent, persist a nomadic mode of living with generations under poverty and discrimination. Nevertheless, the ethnic group is still famous for its lively, optimistic character with great talent for music and dancing. The composer portrayed several aspects of Romani’s nature with appropriate arrangements, leads to the perfect combination of melodic and technique character of violin. The original version is with orchestra accompanied, the arrangement is for concert band, adapted by celebrated Hong Kong composer Yuen-hing Yau with a brilliant effect. The arrangement can also be adapted to Marimba solo, with distinct savour.
