“Climbing Tune” is a type of mountain song popular in the regions of Hequ, Shanxi, and Wuchuan, Inner Mongolia. It is characterized by a distinctive structural pairing of upper and lower melodic phrases. This particular piece is composed by combining two “Climbing Tune” melodies, one of which is based on the traditional love song “Yang Po Li Carries Firewood for Her Lover.” The melody paints a vivid picture of a rural girl standing on a hillside, using the act of carrying firewood as an excuse to wait for her beloved.
In this arrangement, the oboe, horn, saxophone, and flute successively present the main melody. The lyrical and melodious middle register is enriched with frequent fourth and fifth intervals, adding a strong touch of Mongolian folk style to the piece. The music’s gentle and delicate melody, paired with its light and flowing rhythm, beautifully captures the romantic longing and aspirations of young villagers in love. Meanwhile, the harp fills the harmonic space with triplet figures, leaving listeners with an endless sense of imagination and nostalgia for this picturesque scene.
