This composition is based on the melodies of Sichuan folk songs, with lyrics penned by Jing Gu. To ensure easy singability, the melody only spans within a major sixth, making the song catchy and memorable. The lyrics depict the fearless and resilient spirit of a woodcutter as he ventures into the mountains to chop wood. The concert band alternates between tension-filled diminished fifth harmonies and strong accents on syncopated rhythms, setting the stage. The French horn and saxophone introduce the spirited and rugged folk theme, followed by the bold performance of the timpani and low brass, adding to the robustness. The middle section delicately reiterates the theme with flute and harp, before the entire composition concludes with a reprise of the grand opening, ending this splendid piece crisply.(Luo Fu Work)
