The melody of “The Scenery of Wuxi” does not have fixed lyrics. Initially introduced from the north with the “Kua Kua” tune, it underwent variations as it spread southward. Often performed instrumentally, the earliest recorded lyrics date back to the early 20th century, featuring modern terms such as “train,” “electric light factory,” and “motorboat.” Wuxi, a renowned city in the South, is praised as the pearl of Taihu Lake, boasting picturesque scenery that has inspired poets and artists throughout history. The melody of this piece is gentle and serene, echoing the beauty of Wuxi.
In the arrangement for concert band, the narrative prelude unfolds captivatingly with the classic combination of flute and clarinet, followed by the presentation of the main theme by clarinet, alto saxophone, and oboe. After a delicate and transparent connecting phrase played by the glockenspiel, the music enters into a broad and melodious theme, accompanied by graceful counterpoint from the baritone voices. The piece concludes in a serene and sustained atmosphere.(Luo Fu Work)
