“Zi Zhu Tiao” is one of the most representative folk songs of the Jiangnan region. Originally a popular folk tune in Suzhou, it later became part of the repertoire of Shanghai Opera. The lyrics describe the ambiguous romance between a young man and a woman, using the gift of a purple bamboo flute as a metaphor for expressing affection. This folk song has a gentle and beautiful melody, fresh and timeless, and embodies the rich Jiangnan style. The theme is first presented by a clarinet section and alto saxophone, followed by the flute playing a decorated melody. The theme then transitions to the tenor section to repeat the themes, enriched with additional percussion and harp accompaniment, adding layers to the music. The piece concludes with a gradually fading harmony that is full of poetic imagery.(Luo Fu Work)
