河北民歌《小白菜》歌詞以獨白的視角，敘述一位孤苦伶仃的稚子自幼喪母，並受到繼母虐待，延伸出對於生母的懷念。全曲歌詞多半以感嘆詞收尾，旋律亦隨之多以下行音階敘寫，彷彿嘆息一般，呈現出嗟嘆的語氣與悲涼的情景。

管樂團編曲以單簧管重奏的四聲部聖詠奏出莊嚴而洗鍊的主題，其後以近乎變奏曲的方式逐一呈示各段落，包含卡農的出現、不同聲部的主題輪轉，以及大膽的調性轉換。樂曲最後以短笛再次奏出空靈而幽盪的主題，長笛、單簧管以平行下行的伴奏音型 ，為主題的最後呈示平添一絲淒苦哀愁。（羅夫 著）

The Hebei folk song “Little Cabbage” recounts the story of a lonely and orphaned child from the perspective of a monologue, describing how the child lost his mother at a young age and suffered abuse from his stepmother, evoking a sense of longing for his birth mother. The majority of the lyrics are filled with lamentations, and the melody descends frequently, resembling sighs, presenting a tone of lamentation and desolation.

In the arrangement for concert band, the solemn and refined theme is played by a chorale of clarinets, followed by a presentation of each section in a manner akin to variations, including the appearance of canons, the rotation of themes among different voices, and daring changes in tonality. The piece concludes with the ethereal theme played once again by the piccolo, accompanied by flowing motifs from the flutes and clarinets, depicting a tearful and sorrowful scene, brimming with poignant emotion.
