“The Little Cowherd” originates from a popular Kunqu tune prevalent in folk culture in Hebei Province. Structured in the rhythmic order of senza misura, slow, medium, and fast, it embodies strong characteristics of the musical form in Kunqu tune. Originally performed on the Chinese flute, it starts with a leisurely and relaxed prelude, gradually accelerating before culminating in a lively and colorful section. The lyrics depict a scene where a village girl asks a cowherd for directions, and the playful cowherd teases her with riddles, creating a lively and amusing interaction.
In the arrangement for concert band, the piece begins with a serene and pastoral theme played by flute and harp. It then transitions into an andante tempo, with a broader instrumentation restating the main theme. This leads into an allegro vivo, initiated by the xylophone, where the melody evolves from distinctive eighth notes to rapidly flying sixteenth notes. Finally, the piece ends briskly and joyfully under a whirlwind of notes.(Luo Fu Work)
