The widely acclaimed folk song “Jasmine” originated from the Qing Dynasty, derived from the folk tune “Fresh Flowers” circulated during the Qianlong period. It spread across China with variations in melody and slightly different lyrics. This arrangement takes the melody from the Cangzhou area in Hebei Province as its blueprint, characterized by a gentle and charming melody that is exceptionally captivating. “Jasmine” enjoys a high level of popularity among Chinese folk songs and has been sung both domestically and abroad since the Qing Dynasty, becoming one of the most representative Chinese musical melodies. The lyrics depict a maiden likening herself to a jasmine flower, yearning for a beautiful and bashful love story. In the concert band arrangement, the gentle theme is first played by the oboe, flowing between the clarinet, flute, and other high-pitched woodwind instruments. The accompaniment is restrained yet precise, perfectly complementing the melody’s graceful character, with the entire piece ending in an ethereal and transcendent atmosphere.(Luo Fu Work)
