The melody of this piece is derived from the folk songs “Can You Guess What Flower It Is” and “Flying a Kite” from Cangzhou, Hebei Province. The music begins with a lively and varied rhythm, with 4/4, 3/4, and 7/8 beats alternating. It then transitions into the theme of ” Can You Guess What Flower It Is” led by the oboe, with a call-and-response structure between the flute and bassoon, echoing the playful question-and-answer nature of the lyrics. As the music develops, the texture becomes denser, culminating in a thunderous conclusion before transitioning into a moderate tempo section.

The moderate tempo section features “Flying a Kite,” originating from traditional folk art forms of “Lotus Falling” in Hebei and other regions. One of the most distinctive musical elements is the use of “seven pieces” (striking bamboo boards with both hands) as accompaniment. In the arrangement for concert band, the arranger cleverly uses woodblocks and xylophone to mimic the sound of the “seven pieces,” accompanying the melodious and gentle folk song theme. The piece concludes by reintroducing the lively opening theme, ending with a grand and elegant arrangement of the folk song.(Luo Fu Work)
