The Yunnan folk song “Song of Riddles” is rich in humorous and playful musical charm, portraying the lively scene of children guessing riddles by singing in a “tongue twister” rhythm. The piece is composed in an ABA ternary form, with the composer ingeniously using the same Riddle melody, employing 2/4 and 6/8 time signatures respectively to present different musical pulses. Starting with the alto saxophone, the andante section quotes the beautiful melody of another Yunnan folk song, “Anning Prefecture,” gradually adding voices to expand the musical texture. The music gradually develops into distant keys, ending the entire piece with an unexpected modulation.(Luo Fu Work)
