Jiangzhou is located in today’s southern Shanxi region, which has been known for its prosperous agriculture since ancient times. This prosperity attracted many immigrants from places like Shaanxi to come for cultivation and trade. The piece “Going to Jiangzhou” has a cheerful and pleasant melody, but its folk song background reflects the sentiment of people leaving their hometowns in search of a livelihood. The lyrics develop from “a single shoulder pole,” describing the scene of porters singing to entertain themselves along their journey. The music begins with the main theme presented by the E-flat clarinet and bassoon, followed by a dialogue between the piano and trumpet, and concludes with a crisp ending.(Luo Fu Work)
