作曲家以民間舞曲《長鼓歌舞》為素材用管弦樂的手法，豐富、生動的展現了瑤族民眾歡歌熱舞的喜慶場面。樂曲用優美的旋律，表現了能歌善舞的瑤族人民的生活情貌。瑤族舞曲突出了民族樂器的音色與性能，善用同組樂器的不同音色組合。是一首按照西方化的表現手法，由中國民族樂曲改編成的現代樂曲。它表明在接受了西方管弦樂隊的影響的中國正在起著怎樣的變化。
