《白牡丹》是日據時代「勝利唱片」公司「雙陳」合作的成名曲，發表於1936 年，當年陳達儒以十九歲之姿寫下〈白牡丹〉⼀曲，將少女嬌、羞、痴、貞比喻為純潔⾃重的⽩牡丹，深刻而不嬌情，以白牡丹來表露少女的心思，實在是相當的難得。曲調方面，在好友兼拍擋陳秋霖的巧妙安排下，將歌仔戲「哭仔調」中哀怨悲戚的部份摘除，而以小音階作鋪陳，配以含蓄文雅的歌詞，使得〈白牡丹〉脫離苦調的悲傷，反而給聆聽者「笑文文」的感覺。

White Peony is a famous song of the “Shuang Chen” collaboration of the “Victor Record” company inthe Japanese Era. It was published in 1936. When Daru,Chen wrote the “White Peony”, he was just 19-yearold.It is quite brilliant to use the white peony as a metaphor to reveal the girl’s mindset. In terms of
tunes, in the ingenious arrangement of his friend andpartner, Chiu-Lin, Chen, the sorrowful and sad part of the Taiwanese opera “Crying Tune” was removed; instead, the minor scales were used and accompaniedby elegant lyrics, which had made the “White Peony” to dispose of the suffering implication. A joyful atmosphere is created despite the melancholy feature of the melody.
