“The Western Theme Fantasia” is a guzheng solo piece with Xinjiang characteristics, co-composed by Ms. Zhou Wang and Mr. Huang Zhenyu in 2005. It vividly portrays the humanistic customs and geographical features of the western region. This composition draws inspiration from Xinjiang Uyghur music, showcasing a typical style with interweaving dance-like and singing-like melodies. The composition revolves around the theme of “fantasy,” featuring intense melodic lines that highlight the rich style of Xinjiang music through its scale composition, exhibiting strong performative qualities. In the symphony orchestra version by Hideaki Miura, the unique tonal qualities and playing techniques of woodwinds, brass, and percussion instruments are fully utilized. The piece begins with the deep tones of the tuba and the slow introduction of the theme melody by the clarinet, evoking a distinct Western-style atmosphere. The fast section of the composition, with its flexible and varied rhythms, tempos, and pitch range, alternates between graceful and delicate and rough and bold, showcasing the character of the Xinjiang people’s singing and dancing abilities. This outstanding work fully embodies the rich Western-style characteristics and ethnic features, making it suitable for both concerts and competitions, where it can achieve remarkable results.
