“Scenery on Borderland” is an arrangement consists of two Uyghur folk songs, which were gathered by renowned Chinese ethnic musician Luobin Wang (1913-1996). The concert band arrangement is made by Taiwanese composer Shuang-liang Hsu. The first quoted melody ‘In That Place Wholly Faraway’ described the yearning for a distant nomadic woman. The melody is characterized by the appliance of Dorian mode and irregular phrasing, which leads to a tranquil and misty atmosphere. ‘Dance of Youth’ emerges after a transition with presenting a brief motif; the melody forms a contrast in character. With lively rhythm, the text described the faded youth as if the bird flew away despite of the circle of time. The four-note motif implies a connection with tune of ancient Western Region. The energetic rhythm portrays an outlook of ethnic dance. The piece is characteristic with simple structure. Ethnic music style is presented successfully by the arrangement of concert band.
