羅大佑為張艾嘉創作了這首歌，那時他正在醫學院念書，寫歌的地方不是在池塘邊，更不是在榕樹下，而是一個普通的地方。他當時腦海中全是粉筆、黑板、便當、課桌，就是在這樣的狀態寫下童年這首歌。由日本作曲家三國浩平改編為管樂團演奏版本，曲風輕快活潑，充分表現兒時天真無邪的模樣。
The piece was dedicated to Sylvia Chang by renowned Taiwanese songwriter and singer Luo Tayou. At the time of writing, he was studying at the medical school. Chalk, blackboard, bento and desk, these common matters were the inspirations and had been put into the text of the song portraying childhood. The arrangement was transcribed for concert band by Japanese composer Kohei Mikuni.
